Downsizing Your Home. The new Black!

Setting the fashion trend in Brisbane.

Downsizing your home
Are we finally growing up? Are we recognising that the need for acres of space, every bell and whistle, does not necessarily fulfil the modern dream of home ownership in Brisbane.

The ‘ideal’ dream home of the ’70’s and ’80’s seemed to include the large acreage block complete grazing horse in the house yard and a sprawling home that made a statement. Those remaining close to the city hub would venture out for social interaction, ooh and a ahh at the idyllic-ness of it all, momentarily think how nice it would be then drive home, thankful they didn’t have to do that commute each day. Those who lived that lifestyle loved it. Brisbaneites moved out! Out to the outer suburbs in droves and tasted the ‘country life’ …..of sorts.

Come the ’90’s, things shifted again. Slowly there was a realisation that this idyllic life came at a cost and usually it was mum’s cost. After school activities and weekend sport meant (usually) mum became a taxi service ferrying the kidlets hither and yon. What should they do? They loved the life but this was becoming a drain. This was before the explosion of outer Brisbane development that has now produced mini fully self contained ‘cities’ that reduce the need to depend on inner city infrastructure. So in the ’90’s, the shift involved families relocating back to the inner 10km circle of Brisbane looking for proximity to schools, predominately secondary schools and transport so mum could be let off the hook.

A lot of those mums and dads of the ’90’s are now heading to the next stage of their lives. The kidlets have flown the coop or are not far from it and freedom beckons. The big question becomes “Why do we need this big home anymore?” There’s maintenance. There’s cleaning. There’s gardening and lawns to mow.

The papers are full of ‘new inner city development’. The young ones are embracing this new lifestyle of living close to trains and buses or better still within walking distance of the CBD. Thinking is changing. How can we economise? Save fuel? Save energy? Not spend every free hour maintaining a house? Gardens?

The shift is happening again. The baby boomers are certainly making their mark. They want to work! They want to travel. They want FREEDOM. And they don’t want to spend every free moment being consumed. With chores.

Downsizing Your Home

Downsizing has become the new black. Looking at all forms of transition to create a lifestyle that embraces all of those things they have had enough of has created this new passion for something stylish, for something smaller yet fulfilling their needs.

As the demand for smaller increases I see two possibilities. There is a huge need for both dual living and duplexes in our inner city precincts. Not everyone wants large community situations as found in the ever rising inner city apartment developments or sprawling city rim townhouse complexes. So surely an alternative should be considered. Clever design could include these concepts in any zone with out creating overbearing ‘residences’. Already one can find monstrosities that have been approved alongside existing moderate residences (and wonder WHY oh WHY!) And I don’t believe this should be confined to higher density planning zones. Surely clever design could produce some interesting and desirable alternatives..
